The Tabitha Foundation
Our foundation, TABITHA, continues to reach out to literally thousands of families through a variety of programs. The Tabitha Foundation was founded by Janne Ritskes in 1991. Tabitha supports the reestablishment of the Cambodian silk industry and more than 189,000 Cambodians through a very unique cottage industry savings program. In addition to marketing Tabitha silks, White Ginger has been directly involved in building homes for Cambodian families as part of the Tabitha Foundation’s efforts to reinvigorate the local communities.
Our longtime working relationship with the Tabitha Foundation continues to teach us about hope and our unlimited possibilities. Our work becomes twofold. As we continue to purchase exquisite silk items to bring to you, we see dramatic change in the lifestyles of the women who work as weavers, dyers and seamstresses.
One major endeavor is to help buy wells for the many families who don't have access to fresh water. Cambodia is blessed with a clean water table. With a well, there would be enough fresh water to irrigate vegetables during the droughts. The well can be capped, sparing the local residents from contaminated water during the flood season. 80% of the Cambodian population earns less than $1 a day and only 1% of all the families associated with TABITHA have access to pure water. Once water is no longer a daily problem, then subsistence farming is possible as well as the possibility of keeping livestock. The cost of a well, including the materials and drilling, is 90 US$. You can be personally responsible for giving a family its first opportunity to succeed.
