Since the first century AD, the trade routes of the Silk Road have provided the world with the covetable fabric known as silk. For over a thousand years, Cambodian silk has been woven by hand and sold in the silk markets from Samarkand to Rome. Before the Kingdom of Cambodia became involved in the global conflicts surrounding communism, this very special land had enjoyed a long history of quality production of silks. Nearly all of this industry was destroyed by the Khmer Rouge. Within the last decade there have been private and government efforts to revive both the art and business of silk production.
